On 2nd January, 1915, the 2nd Essex battalion of 12 Brigade, 4th Division moved into trenches near Le Touquet, a small hamlet near Ploegsteert, in Belgium where they remained for most of the month and through into February with companies rotating between the front line and billets in reserve. Charles Goddard died from wounds on 26th February but as yet there is no information as to where and on what date he was wounded.
